An exquisite 4 square miles of hidden tarns, volcanic fells and great views north in to the higher Lakeland peaks make Dunnerdale Fells one of the hidden gems of the Lake District. Set between the tiny hamlets of Broughton Mills and Ulpha the area is only visited by those who are in the know. Whilst I was up there I met a few solitary walkers, a couple just stat under an outcrop enjoying the views and some sheep; it is an area to escape and explore. Maybe this is why Wainwright, despite expressing the view that the Duddon Valley was his favourite Lakeland valley, did not write about the Dunnerdale Fells and the spectacular summit of Stickle Pike, he wanted to keep the area a secret. Alternatively it is a so and so to get to and operating on public transport was going to be awkward. I have outlined a route that I believe is best when exploring these fells but it is not an area to follow a route, there are a myriad of sheep tracks dotting the landscape and they do as well as any official path. All I do suggest is a visit to Stickle Pike (the highest fell) and the beautiful tarn at the foot of its steep slopes but away from this the whole area is delectable.
Recommend: Take the time to drive to either Ulpha or Broughton Mills and explore. I prefer starting at Ulpha but only because I prefer the Duddon Valley.

| OS Map: | O/S 1.25,000. OL6 The English Lakes South western area. |
| Start Point: | 197930. Ulpha. A 100 yards to the south of the bridge is some parking and the path leads directly east past the old school. |
| Terrain: | Underfoot is good, theere is a clear bridleway leading to Stickle tarn and from then there is a choice of sheep tracks to follow on the higher areas of the fell |
| Eating & Drinking: | My choice is to walk from Ulpha but this means a trip up the valley to the Newfield Inn at Seathwaite but for those at Broughton Mill the Blacksmiths Arms avoids the journey. |
