- Low level walk to a good viewpoint
- A good viewpoint of Windermere
- An unusual Wainwright
There are not so many quiet walks near Windermere but it is unusual to meet anybody on this circuit of Troutbeck Tongue. The summit is low (under 1,200 foot) and is straightforward to arrive at from a forward assault but much more enjoyable is an exploration of Hagg Gill before embarking on the fell’s slopes. Hagg Gill is a pleasant meandering stream leading up to the desolation under Stony Cove Pike but the excellent track makes it very enjoyable in its lower reaches. Just in time the track divides and the north end of the Troutbeck Tongue ridge can be attained easily and quickly. There is a path meandering along the 1/2 mile summit ridge with the views gradually improving at each step. The summit is a good viewpoint from where to enjoy the Troutbeck valley and Windermere before a steep descent leads back down to the 1 mile road back to Troutbeck. A really pleasant walk when the clouds are low on the higher fells.
Recommend: When the clouds are low, the ridge on Troutbeck Tarn offers a much better alternative than a visit to Ambleside or the like!
