Lying south of the Coniston fells Woodland Fell and the delectable Beacon Tarn offer a beautiful 1/2 day in exquisite country which is choked with bracken, heather and small rocky outcrops. Nestling within these low lying hills is Beacon Tarn which is one of my favourite patches of water; tranquil waters and views across the southern giants offer the perfect backdrop for those with a photographic bent or an ornithologists eye. Similar to the Dunnerdale Fells a few miles to the west Woodland Fell is a place to linger and explore – I was inexorably drawn to the highest point at Blawith Knott and coupled with the tarn this made a focus for the walk. However the tracks do not necessarily help define any logical route (they are made by sheep not us lot) so I would urge you to choose your own sheep track and do not be surprised when it disappears into the bracken. Probably the most enjoyable thing about looking for the best 100 Lake District walks is encountering new, virgin areas which I had previously dismissed out of hand.

Recommend: Starting from the Coniston side brings you straight on to the fell and is easily accessible from Coniston itself or from A5092 to the south.

Start Point: SD 289891. Park in the small hamlet of Water Yeat and head first for Beacon Tarn.
Height to Climb: 232ms (760 feet)
Terrain: There is a clear track to the tarn but the higher lands to the south are more a question of sheep tracks to Blawith Knott. A good track leads from here back to the lower ground.
Eating & Drinking: Beacon Tarn is a fantastic spot for a picnic. There is nothing at Water Yeat, and Torver and Lewick Bridge are 3 miles in either direction.
