- Highest point in England
- Spectacular scenery throughout
- 2 pretty tarns enroute
The highest point in England is Scafell Pike (3,210 feet/978 ms) which is best reached via the Corridor Route from Styhead Tarn above Seathwaite. The alternative from Wasdale Head is rather an unremitting pull. The Corridor Route winds its way through the most rugged yet spectacular rock scenery in England and is correctly deemed a classic; the deep gash of Piers Gill and the views of rarely seen Wasdale adding to the rock panorama. The problem is that the underfoot terrain demands a lot of attention so stopping is more frequent in order to appreciate the ever changing views. The summit plateau is an uninspiring boulder field with the highest point not really inspiring the best views; interest for those of a geological bent (the boulders on the summit being literally blown out of the ground in a volcanic eruption) and relief for the majority who are just pleased to arrive. The return via Great End and Sprinkling Tarn s initially hard work but increasingly pleasant as beautiful Borrowdale opens up before you.
Recommend: Take in Lingmell, the extra footage is worth it for the wonderful views back down Borrowdale but more so Wasdale and down to the sea.

| OS Map: | O/S 1.25,000. OL6 The English Lakes South western area for the main high hills. The walk starts on OL4 North western area |
| Start Point: | 235123. The road near Seathwaite is always packed with cars parking at he side of the road. That is fine. |
| Terrain: | Well worn paths lead to and from Safell Pike. The summit plateau is bouldery and hard on the soles! |
| Eating & Drinking: | The Yew Tree at Seatoller and the the Langstrath Inn at Stonethwaite are fine for a refreshing drink, each still retaining some Lakeland charm |
