Just off the M6 at Tebay is a fantastic area of limestone pavements near the village of Orton. I took off on a misty day to explore the 2 scars (Orton & Great Asby) from Orton and after a steepish climb through some fields broke on to the pavements. This is access land and, although there is a public footpath which criss crosses the pavement, I just headed off where my feet led me. This led unsurprisingly to the highest ground on each scar; on Orton there is a monument for Queen Victoria’s jubilee, whilst a cairn adorns the higher land on Great Asby. However it is the pleasure of walking on the pavements which make the walk satisfying and very different; I am led to believe the views are a second major attraction but not on the day I was up!

Recommend: There are some dry stone walls running across the pavements – try not top climb over as there is some suitable gates if youyu search close enough

Start Point: NY 622082. Park in Orton centre and follow the B6260 untill a minor road goes right whilst still in houses. The bridleway is at the bend of the road and goes due north through some outbuildings before entering fields.
Height to Climb: 219 ms (718 feet)
Terrain: 2 public bridleways criss cross the area but the walking is mainly on limestone opavements which can be hard on the fot souls andtwist the ankle a little.
Eating & Drinking: Sadly I have not yet tested the George Hotel in Orton but it serves Jennings so I am sure is good. There is also a tea shop.
