Angletarn Pikes

I have included considerable numbers of fells in this area of the Lakeland for a reason – almost without fail they offer some of the most interesting climbs in the Lake District. Angletarn Pikes has always been a popular climb, principally due to the magnificent tarn which sits between itself and Brock Crags. Angle Tarn is not smooth sided, deep and a little cold as many Lakeland Tarns are (they being north facing) but enjoys a wide basin surrounded by low craggy hills and punctured by inlets and grassy knolls. The Pikes themselves are often bypassed by those intent on seeking the pleasures of the tarn but they are worth a pleasant scramble to the twin summits. The highest point is on the northern outcrop albeit with the smaller cairn. Hartsop is a pleasant starting point and it matters little which route up is taken, I headed first towards Ullswater and the col between Place Fell and Angletarn Cags but it matters little. Both climbs are on stony paths and are at times steep but they have something in common, they are both very rewarding.

OS Map:	O/S 1.25,000. OL5 The English Lakes North Eastern Area
Start Point:	409131. There is a small car park at the far end of Hartsop. Either route up is as good as the other.
Terrain:	The tracks are clear and unmissable except for the clamber/scramble over the twin summit areas. Pick your own route here.
Eating & Drinking:	There is nothing at Hartsop but the Brothers Water Inn is good as is the Kirkstone Inn. There is a greater choice in Patterdale & Glenridding.
