1,612 ft. Up to the age of 7 I holidayed in the idyllic little hamlet of Millbeck staying with my gran so any visit to the area of “Underskiddaw” brings back a host of hazy memories. I do remember never quite understanding why Dodd, of all hills, had to have its coat of trees when all else was bare but I would urge anyone on this walk to take to its steep slopes and climb to the top. The views are superb once you eventually break out of the trees; particularly satisfying after negotiating the non existent forestry tracks, we simply took to the steep slopes! there is barely 200 ft to the summit from the trees.

Walking in the floodplain between Bassenthwaite and Derwentwater is easy and straightforward to follow as a number of people clearly follow the Allerdale Ramble which links Seathwaite in Borrowdale and the Coast. This is really a good wet weather walk when the clouds are over the high summits, full of interest and adventure if a little damp underfoot..

Recommend: Have a look for the house in Millbeck called Rowling End – what a magnificent place, why did the family ever sell it!

Start Point: NY250235. There is parking on the roads near the Derwent Lodge. Follow the road and turn left before the river before the River Derwent.
Height to Climb: 444 ms (1,456 feet)
Terrain: The flood plain near the river can be wet (obviously!) and the track up Dodd is not always clear.
Eating & Drinking: I particularly like the Farmers Arms in Portinscale but there is a good tea shop and the Derwent Lodge Hotel is deservedly popular.
Similar Walks Nearby: Derwentwater via Ullock Pike
