Hen Comb near CrummockL152
- Climb graceful Hen Comb
- Return via Crummock Water
- A walk of real contrasts
This is one of those rare breeds, a cracking and remote walk but right in the heart of the Lake District. Whilst the crowds stopping at Buttermere are heading up Red Pike, Haystacks or Grasmoor (all steep but rewarding climbs) the solitary walkers looking for some peace heads north west in to Mosedale. Hen Comb is a graceful fell which is only ever climbed by Wainwright baggers but is well worth visits from more discerning walkers. Couple the climb with a return via Crummock Water and it really is great value.
I climbed Hen Comb and completed the walk in rapidly deteriorating conditions which is why the photography is largely confined to the first half of the walk. From the summit of Hen Comb driving rain dampened my enthusiasm (the photos of Crummock are from a previous walk). However the virgin territoy of Mosedale and the climb up Hen Comb is fantastic, all the more so because you will be on your own!
Recommend: A few additional temptations, Scale Force on the first climb, a peep over to Ennerdale from Floutern Tarn and a packed lunch on the summit of Hen Comb.
