2154′. Place Fell occupies a dominant situation at the head of Ullswater with sensational views in all directions. From here the entire Helvellyn range stands out in perfect profile whilst the views both up the full length of Ullswater and over Hartsop to Kirkstone Pass are magnificent, particularly in dappled sunlight or in the late evening.

Even without the views Place Fell has substantial virtues. The summit area is a great area to explore, the rocky outcrops and grassy knolls typifying what is so unique about the geography of the Lake District fells. Throw in what Wainwright describes as the “most beautiful and rewarding walk” in Lakeland which passes alongside the Ullswater shoreline and the easy access from Patterdale and it is difficult to argue that the climb of Place Fell is one of the best 1/2 days to be had. If only it had a more inspiring name! I named it as one of my favourite top 10 fells in Britain in a recent blog.

Recommend: Keep your eyes well peeled on Place Fell. On my recent visit I was nearly decapitated by a flying deer, part of the herd based in and around the hills of Martindale

Yesterday was my first ascent of Place Fell since November 1983. I’m a lot older, and struggled a bit in a couple of places, but all in all i feel a great sense of accomplishment having managed the circuit route that included Martindale, Howtown and then the Lakeside Path. Can’t wait for the next chance to revisit my past.
