A Circuit of Ennerdale WaterL056
- Lovely lakeside walk
- The full circuit is next to the lake
- Quieter than most lakeside walks
A walk around Ennerdale Water is the most satisfying lakeside walk within the Lake District. The back of Ullswater is more picturesque but the remoteness of Ennerdale gives the walk a sense of peace and tranquility which is unequaled on the more popular lakes. Ennerdale also has the advantage that it is both an ideal size for a full circuit (6.5 miles) and there is a track / forestry road which sticks close to the shoreline for the entire way. There is no hassle, no stroppy landowners, it is easy to walk along and clear to follow.
The section on the south side is better than that to the north and I would suggest starting here as it is best enjoyed before any tiredness sets in. In addition the views are superb looking up the long valley of Ennerdale (despite the forests which cloak the upper valley) whilst the return along the forestry road is rather ruined by the trees. Ennerdale is a reservoir for some of the West Cumbrian towns, but even this has not affected its beauty and appearance – a visit to Ennerdale is certainly worth the extra effort.
Recommend: A late summer evening when the sun is low to the west is the best time of the year to do this walk.
