Such an easy walk for so many staying in Ambleside yet so few actually do it. Loughrigg Fell is in a beautiful setting, a series of rocky knolls and heather clad hollows are so typically Lake District as is Lily Tarn which overlooks the length of Windermere but in minature. The views are stunning throughout the walk though with the Langdales, north towards Skiddaw and even the Helvellyn range in perfect sillouette whatever the time of the year. It is a relatively short walk but I have found it ideal for so many situations; out with a young family, a crisp winters day, lounging around in the summer and hopefully when the legs start to go this will still be in range!

Recommend: Once you have completed the high level route there is a lower alternative (on the map) which skirts the shores of Rydal Water and takes a delightful path from Dove Cottage to Ambleside.

Public Transport: The 599 service from Ambleside runs every half hour and takes roughly 20 minutes.
