- Includes the best view in England
- Explore the village of Threlkeld
- Scores of Wainwright fells in view
I believe that the view from the corner of the wall above High Row Farm on the Keswick side of the walk (258310) is the best view in England that can be accessed without any undue difficulty. To the west Keswick and the north western fells are supremely framed and fascinating to name; Causey Pike, Grisedale Pike and Catbells all fighting for prominence with the bigger hills further south clearly outlined in the morning’s light (best in winter) but this is surpassed by the view along the Helvellyn range and down St John’s in the Vale. The ridge is seen as a rising step of hills leading to the final climb just short of the summit whilst the lovely St John’s in the Vale offers a contrast of flat fields and small rocky outcrops encouraging anyone to further exploration. The remainder of the walk forms a loop around the lower slopes of Blencathra (Saddleback) passing through Gategill Farm and its still active hunting pack and above Blease Farm, now notorious for being extensively fortunate when a landslip during the floods of November 2009 ran out of power just yards from the farm walls. The path of the land slip can be clearly seen. At the stream above the village it is worth pondering fell running as there is a traditional race up Hall’s Fell and back in August (the steep hill on the right), record 28 minutes return to the pub!
Recommend: Follow the road west to the Blencathra Centre, an outdoor centre where you will be welcomed, there may even be a local exhibition showing
