Lealholm  is one of many pretty villages in the Esk Valley and so I was inspired to try and cross the moor and walk the banks of Scaling Reservoir. There is a steep climb on to the moors and easy walking on the eastern leg. Before long Scaling Reservoir came in to view, a lovely patch of water that is owned by Northumbrian Water but made open for fishermen and nature lovers both. Turning south to return over the moors I made a bee line for the Beacon. I soon lost the track as I headed too far to the east but picked up a land rover track hat helped. The Beacon was splendid and the walk back in to Lealholm revealing great views of the Esk Valley

Recommend: This is an area that is tricky to navigate on. The bridleways that are marked are intermittant at best and difficult to follow, there are plenty of landrover tracks though and with the Beacon as a landmark linking these tracks is the best way to cross the moor,
