For me the Yorkshire Moors are all about the peace and solitude of the moorland walking and there is no better example of this than the ridge to the south and west of Carlton Bank. It is a steep pull to get there, particularly starting in the village but once there the views over the Vale of Mowbray are wonderful as is the walking. Passing the exposed gliding station may seem a little bizarre but take time to visit some of the more isolated cairns and views before dropping in to the woods south of Faceby. Those creating the long distance paths of the Lyke Wake Walk, the Cleveland Way and the Coast to Coast knew what they were doing by taking this route over the moors of Carlton – a real favourite.

Recommend: Only the mile between Faceby and Carlton is not so good – take the signed footpath between the two and leave the road.

OS Map: O/S 1.25,000. OL26 North York Moors West Buy Map
Start Point: NZ 509042. Park in the centre of Carlton and head straight up the road towards Sutton Bank - the worst is first.
Height to Climb: 319 ms (1,046 feet)
Terrain: I love the almost endless feel of walking on moorland tracks - they are excellent, the remainder is tarmac or a woodland path.
Eating & Drinking: The Blackwell Ox in Carlton is a country inn specialising in Thai Food with the more traditional Sutton Arms in Faceby. Worth stopping at the cafe on Carlton Hill for a quick bite enroute.

  1. Peter says:

Road from Carlton is signposted to Chop Gate, not Sutton Bank – the glider club/station has been demolished – the Sutton Arms isn’t open at lunchtimes, & the views are over Teesdale to the Penines, not the Vale of Mowbray – but an excellent walk!

Wife and kids away so was looking for a good walk – walked this today, what a great walk, thank you so much! Lots of good exercise at the beginning but the moors, especially with the heather in bloom, made it totally worth it. Thanks again!
