My Favourite Short Walks pt 2


2 years ago I wrote a blog describing my favourite 10 short walks in the Lakes, Dales and North York Moors.

10 is not really sufficient so here are another selection of my favourite short, but very satisfying walks.

1. Waterfalls above Askrigg (Dales) 

A pretty tumbling beck falls through woodland towards the village of Askrigg, ripe for exploring.

2. Upper Borrowdale (Lakes) 

Borrowdale is one of the easiest and most attractive valleys in England crowned by the small hill of Castle Crag.

3. Whitby and the Coast 

A working fishing harbour, an attractive abbey and some fine coastal walking at Whitby on the North Yorkshire Coast.

4. Orrest Head,Windermere (Lakes) 

Lakeland in minature on the outskirts of Windermere; a small fell with outstanding views along the country;s longest lake.

5. Nicky Nook (Lancaster) new

A popular walk on the fringes of the Forest of Bowland but easily accessible for most walkers.

6. Hay Meadows at Muker (Dales)

The attractive village of Muker is the base for a walk in the hay meadows (best in June) of Upper Swaledale.

7. Lost World of Dallowgill (Dales)

Hidden away in the eastern Dales, Dallowgill has pretty woodland, open moors and many undiscovered delights.

8. Rievaulx Abbey (North York Moors) 

One of the best preserved abbey ruins is at Rievaulx surrounded by woodland, moor and river. The monks chose well.

Semer Water is full of character and interest for anyone interested in nature and how it can be preserved in today’s frenetic world.

10. Dacre & Dalemain (Lakes) new

An old country house, a lovely unspoilt village and a riverside stroll are all included in this short walk from Pooley Bridge.
