The Dales 30 – Now a Book

The ‘Dales 30’ are the 30 mountains in the Yorkshire and Cumbrian Dales that top 2,000 foot.

I have written and produced this book for a number of reasons.

Primarily I like the mountains themselves. They are full of interest, each one has its own personality and they offer an interesting challenge to climb.

The mountains themselves are sadly neglected. There is some wonderful ridge walking on many of them and away from the ‘3 Peaks, of Ingleborough, Whernside and Pen-y-Ghent you will not see a soul. Pleasant as this can be I could not help feeling that it is a waste.

Finally, there is no guide book on the mountains (and precious little information)  and there should be! Once I had developed the challenge itself I felt it was definitely worthy of publicity.

The book was put together with the support of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and as a result 5% of any book sales will go to the 3 Peaks project which protects the footpaths and challenge of the 3 Peaks.

I have given the book its own flavour and personality which is different from other guide books and different from other mountain books. I would like it to stand out.

The majority of the book is spent describing each mountain:

  • Plenty of unique photography
  • A Personal description of the mountain with some quirky anecdotes and advice for the would be climber.
  • Route descriptions including My Favourite Route which may not be the most popular. A sketch map of the routes is also included.
  • Other interesting anecdotes (often historical or geological) about the mountains or nearby area.

In addition there are 5 blogs written from local personalities about differing aspects of the Dales 30. The issue of public transport, accessibility, maintenance of the paths and the 3 Peaks challenge are all tackled.

The book is attractively produced and a pleasure to read; written and produced by a local walker, printed locally and supported by the guardians of the area. Surely a must for anyone climbing the mountains of the Yorkshire and Cumbrian Dales.

The Dales is a great place to visit at any time of the year and the Dales 30 provide a reason to do it.
