- A vast peat hagged moor
- Lying between Wharfedale & Wensleydale
- Good views of the 3 Peaks (allegedly!)
I headed for Yockenthwaite Moor on what I deemed to be a cold frosty day where the land would be frozen and I would be able to avoid the infamous peat hags. Sadly I misjudged the weather, the cloud was down and moist enough not to keep all the ground frozen (I blame the met office). The peat hags were bad, at one stage I lost a boot in a bog and spent 5 minutes digging it out from the oozing mess, but some though s to a ‘better ‘route can mean that it was crossable. However I believe that this is the worst peat hags I have come across in England with the exception of Mickle Fell and worse than anything I have encountered in Scotland.
The route from the north (my chosen one) is made better by an excellent fence removing any route finding difficulties and by starting and finishing on good stretches of easy byways. Also coming from the traditional and largely unspoilt Raydale with lovely Semer Water a backdrop does top and tail the trip nicely.
The summit cairn does feel it is floating away on a sea of peat hags, whether it really is the highest point is anyone’s guess!
Recommend: Definitely the northern route is best for the reasons mentioned above, a direct assault fro Yockenthwaite hamlet is quicker but lacking in any sort of pleasure.
