Remote, wild and exceptionally beautiful and that describes only the lowland route through Mallerstang. If any walk typifies the advantages of taking the train (and a stunning train ride at that) then the walk down Mallerstang does. Starting off from Garsdale Station I climbed a small section of Lunds Fell to try and locate the source of the River Eden, having failed (it could be any where) then the crossing of Hell Gill soon made me forget the earlier failure. The route drops down near Pendragon Castle and from there follows the Eden (now a surprisingly powerful river) past Lammerside Castle and down to Kirkby Stephen. A walk in two parts but offering a real perspective of this lovely valley.

Recommend: On a second day take the train again between the two stations but return via Wild Boar Fell, mainly trackless but with wonderful views and offering a real sense of adventure.

Transport: Use the wonderful Settle to Carlisle railway. Kirkby Stephen station is  nearly 1 mile uphill outside the town though, Midweek the train leaves Kirkby Stephen at 9.48 or 12.50, has slight changes on Saturday (10.20, 12.46) and Sunday (10.21)
