Askrigg to Leyburn via Aysgarth FallsD121
- Bus from Leyburn to Askrigg
- Wensleydale sits in the central Dales
- Visit Askrigg, Aysgarth Falls & Castle Bolton
There is so much to see in Wensleydale the biggest challenge is to filter the best from the rest. In my opinion Aysgarth Falls, Castle Bolton and the villages of Askrigg and Carperby are the best but many would want to include Hawes and Hardraw Falls. However to do everything in a day is really difficult and I wanted time to soak in the pleasures of the dale itself. Wensleydale is softer than the surrounding dales; the valley floor is open, the hills to north and south gentler and it is less influenced by its industrial past as a result. I must admit to enjoying Wensleydale most in Autumn and Spring with the lower light creating some wonderful colours and shadows.
Recommend: If you want to shorten the walk (save nearly 4 miles) and still include the best section pick up the bus at Castle Bolton.
Transport: The 156/157 leaves Leyburn (Market Place) at 8.30, 9.40 or 11.40 and arrives in Askrigg approximately 40 minutes later every day except Sunday. On Sunday the 856 Dalesbus leaves at 10.03 and stops at Bainbridge, 1/2 a mile further on than Askrigg.
