Only quite recently have I been stopping and exploring the little market town of Kirkby Lonsdale with its quirky shops, narrow streets and fine central market place. I like it and I particularly like the newly improved path that runs along the river Lune (suitable for push chairs and wheelchairs) from Devils Bridge. Of course the steep Radical steps defy many an able bodied at this stage but the rewarding view near the church was once a favourite of no less than John Ruskin. It is a short walk, but can be extended a little by following the Lune further north from Ruskins viewpoint, but even if you are only passing enroute up the A65 it is worth stopping at Devils Bridge, doing the walk and enjoying a butty.

Recommend: Stay for a mini break in Kirkby Lonsdale instead of just passing, there are some good walks (see below) and the town really does have a good buzz.

OS Map: O/S 1.25,000. OL2 Yorkshire Dale South & West Buy Map
Start Point: SD 614783. I started at Devils Bridge and took the path along the river first. It depends if you are staying in Kirkby Lonsdale or passing through.
Height to Climb: 33 ms (108 feet)
Terrain: Easy walking on a wide path along the river and through the town, steep steps between.
Eating & Drinking: There are some fine cafes and pubs in the town which are full of character but it would be remiss of me not to mention the Devils Bridge butty van (and I do not even own a motor bike)
