Whernside

Yorkshire 3 Peaks in 3 Days (Each Day)

Day 1. Pen-y-Ghent (Roughly 9 miles)

From Horton-in-Ribblesdale we will follow the traditional route up Pen-y-Ghent. From the summit we will carry on towards Plovers Hill before dropping down to the old drovers road linking Littondale and Ribblesdale. The return takes us past Hull Pot, a stunning limestone waterfall.

Day 2. Whernside (Roughly 10 miles)

Park at Ribblehead and then follow the Settle Carlisle railway past the famous viaduct and Blea Moor Tunnel. From here leave the traditional route to enter the head of Dentdale and climb Whernside via 3 Tarns on the northern shoulder. From the summit drop back in to the head of Ribblesdale and return via the viaduct from the west.

Day 3. Ingleborough (Roughly 11 miles)

Start at the lovely village of Clapham then climb Ingleborough via Ingleborough Cave, Trow Gill and the dramatic Gaping Gill. The plateau where the summit lies is a large flat boulder field with excellent views in all directions. The return to Clapham is via some of the most dramatic limestone pavements in England .

Fantastic 3 days with great company. We really enjoyed walking with Jonathan and we could appreciate each day without the bother of following a map/ directions.
The only thing Jonathan didn’t manage to organise was the weather on day 3 (which was a bit wet and windy) !! 🙂

  • JOAN HYLAND says:

What a fabulous three days walking in the Yorkshire Dales with the benefit of a guide and a great group. Having the time to appreciate each of the three peaks by undertaking a peak a day was wonderful. The circular walks allow you to see additional aspects of the peaks you may not do so on your own. Jonathan has a wealth of experience and knowledge which he imparts in an informative and enjoyable way. It was a great break !

  • Sue Trott says:

What a fabulous 3 day walk! Jonathan is an excellent guide: full of knowledge, advice, teaching skills and is always happy to answer questions – ask about the tree formations on the Whernside walk! The walks were well paced with stunning scenery from start to finish. Even the rain and low cloud did not dampen the spirits of the group. Out walking in the fresh air with like-minded people was just what I needed to clear my head, have meaningful conversations but most of all, have fun! Everybody needs to experience at least one guided walk with Jonathan: you won’t be disappointed!

I would really recommend Jonathan’s 3 Peaks in 3 days trip to appreciate the beauty of this area of Yorkshire rather than a mad dash to bag them all in 12 hours. The trip in early September was very enjoyable with a small jolly group of like minded people and a knowledgeable guide who showed us interesting alternative routes and features along the way.

  • Catherine Cooper says:

What a fabulous short holiday! Jonathan’s enthusiasm for the area is infectious, his knowledge extensive and his leadership excellent. I loved walking that bit further afield than the usual slog around the Three Peaks, through wild moorland with tremendous open views and scarcely any evidence of human occupation. A great break and I felt like I had been away for a week.

We spent a fabulous three days exploring the Yorkshire Three Peaks with Jonathan. It was great to have more time available than on the “Challenge” to get to know the character of each mountain and visit some corners off the well-beaten track. Jonathan was an excellent and knowledgeable guide, attentive to the pace individuals could manage, willing to develop our navigation skills, good company, and enabled the group to blend well.

  • Sharon Collinson says:

Good evening Jonathon. Dave and I really enjoyed our beginnings course with you the other week. We would love to do the three peaks with you but cannot do the dates in September. Would you be able to let us know when you arrange any more dates for that event please?

    Kind regards
    Sharon And Dave Collinson

We really enjoyed The 3 Peaks in 3 Days walks. Jonathan is a really knowledgable guide and by taking on each peak on separate days he is able to take you off of the beaten track. Highly recommended for anyone who likes good walks, meeting like minded people and learning about the area.

  • Peter John Paynton says:

I have just completed the 3 peaks in 3 days with Jonathan as our guide and a small group of like minded people (aged from 44 to 70). Even as an experienced walker I can honestly say it was most enjoyable and informative. Especially going “Off Piste” as described by Jonathan; getting away from the main routes of the 3 mountains ensured less people and more fantastic views (weather permitting). The pace was well judged by Jonathan, we enjoyed the hard climbs punctuated with regular stops; as well as the extended routes to take in the less well known features such as Plover Fell on Pen y Ghent and the Tarns of western Whernside. Jonathan is obviously in his element “on the hill”, knowledgeable and very approachable. What a place to call your office. I have always had a desire to complete the 3 peaks but never as a race. This event helped me achieve my goal, thank you Jonathan. I highly recommend these walks and further information can be found at https://where2walk.co.uk/

A brilliant trio of guided walks for those wishing to appreciate the Yorkshire Three Peaks as opposed to simply undertaking the 12-hour challenge. Jonathan is one of the very best guides I have encountered and someone whose knowledge and love of the Dales (and Lakes) comes across in spades on this Three Peaks in Three Days mini-break. This series of daily 10-mile walks visiting Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough utilises little of the well know challenge route itself and so introduces walkers to the most interesting routes by which to visit these summits. I can highly recommend the various guided walks and courses that Jonathan offers via https://where2walk.co.uk/ and look forward to his new book describing the history of the 3 peaks and these three walks when it appears later this year.
