Where is this walk?

Silverdale Head

July 13, 2017

Silverdale is tucked away to the south of the Lake District off Morecambe Bay. The round of Silverdale Head includes some rocky coastal and beach walking. Also a visit to a nature reserve and an exploration of the town.

The Walk

Silverdale is an attractive village well located on the shores of Morecambe Bay in the Arnside & Silverdale AONB. The temptation is to head straight for the shoreline. This I did, following the mix of beach and rock down to Jenny Brown’s Point (no idea who Jenny Brown is but she certainly picked a great spot to promote herself). Less happily in 1894 a pleasure boat crashed on Jenny Brown’s Point and 25 locals were killed. It is the worst accident ever in Morecambe Bay.

A rough path follows the beach on the cliff side often dipping to join the beach itself but I enjoy the scrambling on the rocks, reliving childhood holidays. The second half of the walk is through National Trust land, easy and pleasant at first but confusing as Silverdale is neared, the new sign posts have not helped. Persevere and the village soon appears. The village itself is quite sprawling but there is a pleasant mix of old and new buildings. The result is a place to explore and enjoy, discover that hidden away art gallery or unusual view. Fortunately it is a place that is often ignored by those heading to the hotspots of Morecambe and Blackpool to the south and the Lake District to the north.

Recommend

Take a picnic to Jenny Brown’s Point, the best point on the coast. However if you have the energy please do the walk from Arnside to Silverdale all the way along the coast.

Navigation Tips at Silverdale Head

Where the path divides after passing the headland at 470738 carry on and follow the path as it skirts through woodland. It enters Silverdale on its eastern side.

Hi did the walk yesterday, but when we got to cows mouth from Jenny Browns point we were unable to follow the cliff top path. We then dropped down to the beach from Gibraltar farm caravan park then followed the shore to silverdale. Is there a footpath on the cliff top that you can follow. Cheers john
