Cross Fell Circular

  • Climb the highest fell in England outside the Lakes
  • Long moorland walk on a good track
  • Far reaching views over the Lakeland fells

Cross Fell summit is an absolute pig to get to – more reminiscent of the Scottish Cairngorm mountains the Lake District fells a few miles to the west. The walk from Garrigill near Alston is a 15 mile circular and although not quite the shortest approach (that distinction lies with the small village of Kirkland to the west) it is the most popular. The entire climb follows the route of the Pennine Way and is on a large and well constructed track and the descent is varied a little by taking the path to the east of the fell. For those, like myself, who like striding out on the moors on a breezy spring day this is a good walk although for many it will be just a question of ticking off the highest point in England outside the Lake District.

Recommend: At 70 feet under the magical 3,000 foot barrier Cross Fell is one of the best challenges in England and a centrepiece of the Pennine Way

  1. Melissa Mair says:

Passed through Garrigill today and the pub looked open with business opening hours from 5 pm.

  2. We get a lot of walkers and cyclists through the village of Garrigill (did you know the George & Dragon is currently closed hoping for new landlord?) Meanwhile, we would like to offer St Johns Pool as a welcome addition to your website. As a private hire pool with sauna and jacuzzi facilities we are also next door to the Village Hall which provided bunk barn facilities and also camping on the recreation ground at the rear. We have welcomed many a tired walker to ease their aching legs in the sauna! (Obviously the pool needs to be prebooked but we’ve only ever had one party miss their session due to taking longer than expected – and they just came in after they’d eaten instead!) We also have a small holiday cottage suitable for couples. If you would like more details or to add us to your website please let me know. We already share your walks with our cottage guests 🙂
    Many thanks for reading.
