Hallin Fell is a small fell near Howtown, perfectly placed for enjoying some of the best views up and down Ullswater. The fell itself is typically lakes, little rocky outcrops, bracken covered hillside and a fine summit cairn.
1271′. Hallin Fell joins the likes of Gowbarrow and Loughrigg Fell as miniature Lakeland classics. The fell is climbed less than the other two due to its location at the far side of Ullswater. I have climbed it many times but most memorably with a young family and two dogs.
Hallin Fell is situated in the elbow of Ullswater. Therefore there are views both up and down the eight mile lake. Looking inland the views of Martindale are both unusual and impressive. On our family walk we climbed slowly up the excellent track from the road passing small rocky outcrops nestled within the bracken. We picnicked in one of the many hollows that make up the summit area. Finally we headed down to the lakeside just to the Howtown side of the splendidly named Geordies Crag. The path is grassy and winds its way through the bracken before joining the lakeside path. The path leads to the steamer at Howtown. It is a lovely short family or summer’s evening walk.
Sadly, for me, Hallin Fell will always be tainted with some sadness. It was my 14 year old border collie, Bracken, final fell. A worthy one though!
A great day out for families. Take the steamer to Howtown from Glenridding or Pooley Bridge for maximum enjoyment.
From the summit a number of faint path head just east of north towards the lake. They are not marked on the map. However any of them provide the best way of varying the descent off the mountain.
Really wonderfull walk! Our kids (7 and 10) and us two arrived on a steamer (no steam though), climbed Hallin Fell to enjoy picnic on top of it, climbed down and walked around. Perfect day.
Warm sunshine, a blue-sky day: Granny and two tinies in tow (at that time 3 and 5), I wanted to provide them with an easy day but one that gave inspiration and an appreciation of what the Lakes has to offer. Hallin Fell is an example of all that is good in the area – with the added Dad benefit of a great thirst quenching lure in Howtown. Easy walk up from the Hause taking the west path option (there are plenty of choices). Kids enjoyed gambling about, the ascent did not tax them at all. Picnic near the top, perhaps 50m north east of the cairn. Lovely views overlooking the lake and back over MartinDale. We ambled down via Geordie’s Crag then took the Steamer along the length of Ullswater, finishing with some beach work and an ice-cream in Glenridding (Dad retrieved the car so missed out on the boat part – there is an easy made path from Waternook back to the Hause, just follow the red dotted trail on the above map). The 5 year old was inspired enough to demand that we climbed Blencathra, and a couple of days later we did exactly that (take plenty of fuel and stop often).
