Walking in the winter months in the Lake District is as good as it gets. On a crisp clear day the low light and autumnal colours give a special days walking even when the higher fells are covered in cloud or snow.
I have listed my 10 favourite Lakeside walks for such an occasion! Not all stick rigidly to the shoreline and some are tougher than others but all make for the best walks that take in one of the lakes
8 1/2 miles
A classic section of rugged lakeside walking from the steamer jetty at Howtown.

7 miles
Rydal and Loughrigg are two exquisite areas of water linked by a low col.
4 1/2 miles
This would be voted most walker’s favourite lakeside walk, short but lovely throughout.
7 1/2 miles
A rarely visited valley but well worth the travelling time as the scenery throughout is excellent.
6 miles
Not lakes but two natural mountain tarns set in a rugged landscape and a spectacular setting.
8 miles
As much for the views of Derwentwater as the actual lakeside walking the walk does this fine lake full justice.
3 miles
A short walk along the Cumbria Way is the best way of seeing the iconic lake, famous for spectacular end of speedster Donald Campbell.
4 miles
Much underrated as a lake as it can be dark and forbidding in winter. Enjoy it before the zip wire arrives!
6 1/2 miles
One of my favourite walks, lake or not but this is a classic combination of mountain and lake in perfect harmony.
Derwentwater has a fine shoreline on its west side, a mix of woodland, shingle beaches and attractive views.
