Hallin Fell, Ullswater

  • A shaggy dog hill of character
  • Beautiful views over Ullswater
  • Network of sheep tracks to explore

1271′. Hallin Fell joins the likes of Gowbarrow, Loughrigg Fell and Haystacks as minature Lakeland classics. Because of where it is hidden (around the backside of Ullswater)  the fell is climbed less than the others but this is no great shame as the paths are in even better condition. It had been a while since I had been up Hallin Fell and it was a quick up and down from the road side (an appalling example of ticking) but this time I was with the family and we took our time.

Hallin Fell is situated in the crook of Ullswater which basically means there are views directly up and down Ullswater in addition to the pretty, but very quiet, Martindale. Other families dotted the hillside as we slowly walked up the excellent track from the road’ passing small rocky outcrops nestled within the bracken. We picnicked in one of the many hollows that make up the summit area, not that the weather was bad, before heading down to the lakeside just to the Howtown side of the aptly named Geordies Crag. The path down was another gem, a little steep, but grassy and winding its way through the bracken before joining the lakeside path and returning back to the steamer at Howtown. It is a lovely walk but one which is tainted slightly by the thought it may well be the last hill Bracken my 14 year old border collie is able to make. It was. A worthy one though!

Recommend: A great day out for families; take the steamer from Glenridding or Pooley Bridge for maximum enjoyment
