Ridges over Grasmere

  • 10 miles of classic Lakeland walking
  • Changing views in the heart of the Lakes
  • Dramatic finale on Helm Crag

Walking from Grasmere had never felt so good as I headed off on to high ridges which broadly circle Easedale Tarn. I had never completed a full circuit of the tarn before and I knew it was a long walk but what I failed to really grasp was the undulating nature of the broad ridges. This is classic Lakeland walking as the track winds its way through a never ending series of rocky outcrops and hidden surprises. The views over the Langdale Pikes (from an unusual angle)are another surprise, the beauty of Far Easedale valley another whilst the views over the tarns of Coldale and Easedale are more expected but none the worse for it.

I included 6 Wainwright summits on this 10 and a half mile circuit although I could not help thinking of the slightly arbitrary nature of those he selected as worthy of summits – one rocky outcrop appears as worthy as another. The exception is of course Helm Crag (better known as the Lion & the Lamb) which provides a fitting finale to the walk, not just the fine summit which requires some Grade 1 scrambling skills but the lovely views over Grasmere on the weary trudge down.

Recommend: Unless you really are ticking avoid the tedious trudge up to High Raise, Sergeant’s Man providing an excellent ‘far point’ to the walk.

Start Point: NY 337075. If parking is not available in Grasmere there is a free option on the Dunmail Raise side of the A591.
Height to Climb: 717ms (2.352 feet)
Terrain: This is a tricky navigational route in mist, particularly at the far end of the walk when trying to locate the path over to Calf Crag. The route undulates throughout, there is barely a step which is on the flat.
Eating & Drinking: Grasmere should suit any taste but I like the Lamb Inn.
