Threlkeld to Keswick via the Old Railway

  • One Way walk along the Old Railway
  • Spectacular views over the fast flowing river
  • Look out for red squirrels in the woods

After Storm Douglas this walk is presently unavailable due to collapsed bridges (updated December 2018). It is planned to re-open during 2019.

The easiest walk in the Lake District runs along the Old Railway (closed in 1972) between Threlkeld and Keswick. It is flat all the way, wooded so keep an eye out for red squirrels which I have seen on more than one occasion, and crosses the fast flowing Glenderamackin river 8 times. Glimpses of Blencathra and Keswick do tease the more adventurous walker and it is possible to leave the Old Railway one and a half miles from Threlkeld and then head up the gentle slopes of Latrigg, a viewpoint offering quite excellent views. The only thing to watch out for is the numerous cyclists young and old making use of the very flat track.

Spend a little time in Threlkeld to explore this lovely small village, if not visiting the pubs certainly the church and the newly refurbished village hall.

Transport: The X5 leaves Keswick bus station at 10.20 then every hour Mon to Sat. It takes 10 minutes. The service is a little less frequent on Sunday but still runs.

At present this walk is not possible to complete in its entirety. However alternatives are signposted on the route.
