Carlton to Osmotherley via the Cleveland Way

  • Over moors and through the trees
  • Finishing in pretty Osmotherley
  • Long distance views

I have headed over the moors many times but this section is still my favourite. The path undulates throughout, passing over the higher moors above Carlton and Scarth Nick and through the forestry near Swainby and Mount Grace Priory and as it bends as well as undulates the views are always changing. There is also opportunities to visit one of the attractive villages just off route or even Mount Grace Priory whilst a few people I know (notably my brother who lives in Osmotherley) prefer the route finishing near Cod Beck Reservoir rather than through the forestry to the west.

Recommend: If at all possible get the bus as far as Carlton, it does make for a long day but the section over Carlton Bank makes for excellent walking.

Transport: The 80/89 bus presently runs an hourly service at 10 past the hour (Mon to Sat)  taking 20 minutes. However this may be reduced in 2014. There is also a Moorsbus service on Sundays and weekends which runs from Osmotherley to Swainby, shortening the walk but still highly enjoyable.
