Moors over Osmotherley

  • A moorland walk from Osmotherley
  • Far reaching views from the Cleveland Way
  • Scarth Nick & the Shooting Lodge

A long day out on the moors above Osmotherley is one of the best walks in the North Yorkshire Moors. Starting with the 2 reservoirs of Jenny Brewster the walk rises up to the vast empty spaces of the Yorkshire Moors. With only a lonely shooting lodge to break up views the high plateau eventually comes to an abrupt end at Swainby with excellent views over Teesside and on to the sea. A woodland clings to the edges of the escarpment before opening up at Scarth Nick where it meets the Cleveland Way. The walk from Scarth Nick back to Osmotherley is a delight and many peoples favourite section, for me though I prefer the wild and lonely spaces on the high moors.

Recommend: There are really very few short cuts on this walk – certainly on the moors stick to the obvious tracks but at Scarth Nick it is possible to avoid most of the final climb by following the road to Cod Beck Reservoir.
