Circuit of Grimwith Reservoir

  • An easy walk in peace and quiet
  • Views across the reservoir
  • Varied bird life

The circuit of Grimwith Reservoir is without doubt one of the simplest walks in the Dales. However it is full of interest, exceptionally peaceful and full of interest for bird lovers, sailing enthusiasts and those after a walk with very few people. Quite why Grimwith Reservoir has so few visitors is one of the mysteries of the area. Nearby Grassington is rammed with people, whilst walk a few miles distance to a ‘well set up for walkers’ ramble and there is no-one there. Amazing!

My last visit was to take my youngest daughter for a 2 hour wind surfing lesson which is perfect for a pleasant ramble around the reservoir. Some other ‘dad’ seemed to be doing the circuit but being blokes we passed and re-passed each other with a quick nod of the head and a comment on the perfect weather. There are some signage describing two of the drowned villages. Gate Up and Grimwith itself but with the exception of the sailing club, that is it. It is a place for nature lovers.

There appears to be no  restriction on wandering down to the club itself, in fact there was a self service/voluntary contribution cup of coffee and cake when I visited!
