Moors north of Slaidburn

  • Lonely moorland walking
  • Mix of rough lanes or paths
  • Excellent bird life

There is a large expanse of rarely visited moorland to the north of Slaidburn and Dunsop Bridge which I had not visited until recently when I had been asked to plan a walk for a 100 km challenge (fortunately I will not be participating!!). The weather was misty and cool as I set off to reccie one of the more remote spots, the ground underfoot damp and the tracks unremembered.

Initially the walking was good along an old coach road  (so easy I was tempted by White Hill to the north) but I knew that the descent in to Whitendale would surely be more challenging. Actually it was not as bad as I had expected and I soon arrived at the lonely farm buildings of Whitendale Farm. A great spot but surely the scene of some traditional old ghost stories or the home of a mad axeman. Hurrying through there was still much to do with the walk barely half done. The car was still nearly 3 miles away over some rough, in places trackless moorland but probably my favourite section, the views across to Stocks Reservoir and Gisburn Forest particularly impressive. It is not a spot to get lost but thoroughly enjoyable none the less, just me and the birds.

Recommend: Next year I am going to learn more about the birds of our area, after such a time my knowledge is really poor.
