Skipton Woods and Castle

  • A pleasant riverside walk
  • Good views over the town of Skipton
  • Daunting views of the castle walls

I always like castles to have a proper history; at some stage they should have been besieged, partly destroyed and have commanding views of the surrounding area. Skipton Castle achieves this (worth the admission price), a rich history which includes being the last Royalist stronghold in the north and beating off a variety of Scottish raids, and pleasingly occupying a commanding position in North Yorkshire. The moat can be clearly seen behind the castle where the walls look impregnable, whilst Skipton Woods was used for many centuries to collect fuel and to provide building materials with the animals providing more than sufficient food for the inhabitants. The woods are now leased to the Woodland Trust and are mainly made up of a large variety of Ash trees and some birch, all which are pleasantly framed along Eller Beck.

The walk follows the shores of the canal in its initial stages before taking to the banks of the river. The paths in the woods are excellent and suitable for push chairs or wheel chairs but away from the woods the walk is rougher.  The walk ends with a pleasant stroll over fields with great views over the town of Skipton.

Recommend: Explore the areas near the canal behind the main street on Skipton.

OS Map: O/S 1.25,000. OL2 Yorkshire Dales South & West
Start Point: SD 988518. There is a car park just past Morrisons which give a good start to the canal tow path which is best from the Shepherd pub. Follow the tow path as far as you can
Height to Climb: 50ms (164 feet)
Terrain: Easy walking on the banks of Eller Beck, the path is narrower once this is left
Eating & Drinking: There is an endless choice of tea shops and pubs to enjoy in Skipton town centre but my favourite is the Wooley Sheep at the bottom of the main street
