The Bentham riverside walk is a pleasant stroll linking High and Lo Bentham. There are some glimpses of Ingleborough and the countryside is excellent.
High and Low Bentham are neighbouring villages separated by an attractive section of the River Wenning. There is more than enough in the two villages to keep the walker interested. In addition the paths on both sides of the riverbank are pleasant particularly on a warm summer’s day. The intriguing waterfall on the sharp river bend midway between the two villages is certainly one highlight. Best however are the great views which are glimpsed in to the wild Lancashire moors or across to Ingleborough and the Yorkshire Dales. It is a quiet unspoilt part of rural Britain, nearly untouched but all the better for it.
Many walks are worth going on to explore. This is definitely one of them. Even if you do not want to drive to the towns it is easy to use the train, This service runs between Leeds and Lancaster. There are a number of excellent pubs in High Bentham, two interesting churches and a pleasant community spirit. Low Bentham is smaller but still pleasant. The villages are on the northern fringes of the Forest of Bowland, an undervalued area for walking.
It is easy to combine with the Heritage walk on the east side of High Bentham. They combine in a figure of eight with High Bentham the centre. Fortunately there is a choice of pubs and cafes to break up the day.
The Bentham riverside walk was surprisingly quiet when I walked it in mid summer. The paths will inevitably become wet after rains so this is a good time to visit.
The footpath from Low Bentham starts on the north side of the Fish Farm. After the farm it drops to the river.
