Catrigg Force from Stainforth

January 4, 2018

A short walk to the lovely waterfall of Catrigg Force from Stainforth. Woodland disguises the falls which are at their most impressive after heavy rains. The return is via a path picking its way through a limestone scar.

The Walk

Catrigg Force is a lovely waterfall that is hidden away in a deep gorge above the village of Stainforth. The waterfall is set back in the trees but opens out beautifully as you enter the gorge. There are two main drops of twenty plus foot separated by a 60 foot copse; apparently the famous composer Elgar’s favourite spot.  The falls do require a little effort to reach but the track is excellent. Do not return direct to Stainforth but follow the route through the remote farms of Winskill (friendly) and down through a lovely copse of woodland which sits on Stainforth limestone scar.

Stainforth itself is an attractive small village, most famous for an excellent country inn, stepping stones over the beck and a rich history based around the monks of Sawley Abbey. The views above the Force are excellent with Pen y Ghent and Ingleborough clearly profiled but also on the descent where Ribblesdale is spread out for miles in each direction.

Recommend

I would always recommend a visit to Stainforth Falls if you are on this walk. The falls are only a couple of hundred metres on the other side of the road/railway. Last time I was there not only did I see salmon jump I also saw a kingfisher.

Navigation Tips on Catrigg Force

After the small gate leading to the falls, pass through a gate i to an open field. Follow the track to a second gate and at that point leave the track and turn sharp right to Winskill Farm.
