Villages of the Esk Valley

August 31, 2017

Take the train from Grosmont to Lealholm and return via the attractive villages of the Esk Valley. The walking is easy and because it stays close to the river it is full of variety and interest (both natural and historical).

The Walk

The beautiful Esk Valley provided the incentive for a one way walk I took with the purpose of exploring some of the pretty villages nearby. Taking the train from Grosmont to Lealholm (good value) I returned via Glaisdale, Egton, Egton Bridge and then Grosmont itself. In my opinion they are the best villages along the Esk Valley. Before starting the walk take time to find the stone steps across the River Esk, a lovely spot.

The landscape by the River Esk is also at its best in this section with some lovely woodland in Arncliffe Woods. This contrasts with the more open walking further up the valley. In addition if you can make some time for a detour there are plenty of options. In addition to a closer exploration of Glaisdale and Egton there is also the woodlands south of Delves and, if you have time and energy, Stone Cross hill near Egton Bridge.

Recommend

Always best to take the train first and then walk back. Therefore there is no stress about missing it!

The train line is part of the commuter service in to Teesside. However at Grosmont it meets the steam trains on the Pickering to Whitby line. I certainly enjoy spending some time here, admiring the wonderful trains from the pretty station.

Transport

The train departs up the valley roughly every two hours. However do check the details

Navigation Tips in the Villages of the Esk Valley

The walk is signposted throughout as the Esk Valley walk so is straightforward to follow. It is worth exploring Glaisdale village when you are passing.

Trains are now 9.02 and 12.32 Mon to Sat. None on Sunday. Pre-booking online (even the previous day) can save around 40%.

I agree with your assessment of the walk. An alternative is to catch the train at Ruswarp and come back along the Esk Valley Walk from Egton Bridge, Glaisdale or Lealholm (depending on legs and lungs), only calling in at Grosmont if in need of food.

    I enjoy your site. Thanks.
