Navigation Training Weekend near Settle
Day 1. We will learn the basic skills of map reading and compass work whilst on a simple (roughly 4 mile) walk.
Day 2. We will convert these skills and develop them by heading off the paths and in to the countryside south of Ingleborough.
“It is great to be able to use the learned skills and actually achieve something. The weekend has given me confidence to take to the outdoors without the fear of getting lost. If I do get lost I will be able to find the route again” Debbie.
The Navigation Training Weekend is ideal for those who want to move from safer walks on paths (and crowds) to explore further afield both away from paths but also in the higher hills where the weather may become a factor.
Being spread over 2 days the course also gives more time to fully understand the techniques and where and how to use them.
Both days are in the beautiful ‘Limestone Dales’ of North Yorkshire. The best place to stay is in the village of Settle
Day 1 is based in Long Preston, an unspoilt village a few miles south of Settle.
Day 2 is from Austwick/Clapham and explores the slopes of Ingleborough.
Both days are just off the A65 so easy to drive to. However if you wish to travel by the excellent train service and stay in Settle we can organize lifts to the 2 villages (and back!)
Day 1. Long Preston
We will meet for a 9,45 start in the Maypole Inn, Long Preston. Here we will spend a few hours understanding the principles of using a map, how to get most out of it and Planing a walk which makes use of it.
We will also discuss the main techniques of using a compasses and most importantly when you need to use it.
The remainder of the day we are out and about in the local countryside practicing the techniques already learnt. It really is a case of practice making perfect.
Return about 5 for a pint and chat through the day.
Day 2. Austwick/Clapham
Meet at 9.30 for a coffee and plan the days walk.
From 10ish head out for the day in to more remote countryside practicing what we learnt the day before. In addition however we will introduce more advanced skills to cope with ‘off path’ walking. These include following a bearing, relocation, leg strategy and slope aspects amongst others.
We will return at roughly 4.30 to 5.
£140 per person for the 2 days
Bring a packed lunch for the days and clothes suitable for the weather and conditions. We will provide maps and compass of you do not have them.
