Previous Examples of Private Navigation Days

  • A group of ladies from Swaledale wanted to learn the skills to explore the local area more. We spent some time in one of their houses understanding more about maps and then the majority of the day out and about in Upper Swaledale.
  • Shaida wanted the confidence to head out on her own to climb the Wainwrights. We met in Ambleside and then spent the day navigating around the Langdale Pikes including the less frequented areas towards High Raise
  • A couple visiting Hawes in the Yorkshire Dales during the Easter holidays wanted their 3 children to learn about maps but also do a fun walk where they could ‘find things’. Their parents were keen to improve their Navigation skills so they could take them further.
  • 4 friends wanted to test themselves in featureless terrain. They were staying in Keswick so we navigated an unusual route up Skiddaw and spent time in the remoter land to the north. The weather was grim, the day challenging but satisfying.

We spent a fabulous day walking from Austwick with Jonathan. We are keen walkers/ trail runners with basic map reading skills. Jonathan is a really patient, thorough instructor and great company. We learnt so much on our day and feel so much more confident in plotting a route, using a compass and reading a map in a lot more detail. We are excited to get out and put in to practice our new skills.
Thank you Jonathan, we look forward to joining you on more advanced courses in the future.

I had a memorable day learning to plot and follow a route with Jonathan around Malham. All the elements aligned. I learnt a lot and have even looked at our OS maps last night and showed my partner the new markings I had learnt. Going to order the compass today.

Just a quick email to say thank you very much for yesterday.

I have had great feedback. Those I have heard from say how much they learnt and what a good teacher you are.

I was sorry to hear that Chris had to pull out. He is having a rough time at the moment with close family bereavements and time out and time outdoors was hopefully going to be a distraction. Such a shame his day was cut short.

Once again, many thanks. I look forward to receiving the course notes. It’s always good to have something to refer to.

My husband, me and our 2 children wanted to learn about maps and compasses so we could enjoy being out as a family. We contacted Jonathan and he took us up Buckden Pike. We learnt a lot and had a fab day all round, we all loved it. Thank you.

We both had a fantastic navigation day & walk with Jonathan, we learned so much about how to use a map and be more observational ! The walk was well planned with lots of places of interest and plenty of stops to allow us to study the map and take compass bearings. The natural beauty in the countryside around Pateley Bridge was breathtaking, and we are now a lot more confident with a map in hand and looking forward to exploring further afield and broadening our walking horizons. We would thoroughly recommend walking and navigating with Jonathan, a great experience from start to finish.

n 2019, my friend and I set ourselves the challenge of completing the 30 Dales mountains in Jonathan’s book ‘The Dales 30’. Although we had been keen walkers for many years our navigation skills were greatly lacking. We did our first few ascents mainly using the text in the book and it was largely luck that got us there! So last year we enrolled on an introductory navigation course with Jonathan. It was excellent and we learned a lot. We tackled our next few fells with much greater confidence. However, there were times when our compass skills weren’t good enough, especially when the clouds came down. Also, we had left to the last the fells that to us sounded much more difficult to navigate – the ones that Jonathan warned were ‘compass country’, or ‘featureless’! So we asked Jonathan for a follow-up day. It was great! We were able to build on the skills of our introductory day, he helped us to really get a grip of the compass work and it was tremendous fun!
We have continued the climbs with renewed confidence and now have just our final one to do…..the ‘featureless’ one! I would recommend Jonathan’s navigation courses to anyone at any level of competence. I would also encourage all walkers to have a go at the Dales 30.

A group of us completed a one day navigation course. We were a mixed ability group, a couple of us having very little in the way of navigation skills, but the day benefitted all of us.
We arrived at the venue feeling a little nervous but Jonathan quickly put everyone at their ease.
Jonathan is an excellent teacher with seemingly limitless patience! The day was informative and also great fun. We left on a ‘high’ eager to get out as soon as possible and use our new-found skills.
I would recommend the course for everyone from the complete novice to those who want to improve the skills they have.
Thank you, Jonathan. We will definitely be booking a follow up day!
