The area is a walker’s paradise on Cumbria’s west coast, and you can also explore one of the Lake District’s most beautiful valleys at Eskdale, which you can reach via ‘La’al Ratty’, the famous Ravenglass to Eskdale narrow gauge railway. England’s highest mountain (Scafell Pike) and deepest lake (Wastwater) are a short drive away. Muncaster Castle, home to the World Owl Centre and MeadowVole Maze, makes a great family day out, the campsite is only 500 yards fr om the seafront and there’s a sandy beach at St Bees, further up the coast. A Roman bathhouse marks the start of the Hadrian’s Cycle Way. You can also take the lovely coastal mainline railway north or south, to St Bees, Whitehaven and Maryport. Ravenglass currently holds a 4 star Visit Britain Award and a 3 star AA Pennant Award.
