Hen Hole Waterfalls & the Schill

August 1, 2025

Hen Hole Waterfalls (or the 3 Sisters as it is sometimes known) are a spectacular cascade of falls under the slopes of Cheviot. Combine a climb of Hen Hole valley with a straightforward walk along the Pennine Way to the fine summit of The Schill.

Hen Hole Waterfalls are tucked on the English side of the border with Scotland. The increasingly narrow College Valley becomes squeezed as it heads south. Just after Mounthoody College Beck turns to the east and enters a tight valley and a series of dramatic waterfalls. The path is intermittent and there is some minor scrambling to get to the best places to view the falls, best seen at the 3 Sisters. It is an excellent place for a cool dip (although the water is a little peaty).

Emerging from College Beck the hike completely changes. A short sharp climb will bring you on to the Pennine Way. Turn left for the 3 mile round trip to the summit of Cheviot but I prefer conserving my energy and follow the Way north. The path passes Auchope Cairn, a fine mountain hut before climbing to The Schill. The Schill is a conical hill with a bouldery summit. The views north and east are superb. It is the last hill before the Pennine Way drops down to its completion at Kirk Yetholm.

Parking: Realistically the best bet is to park at Mounthoody Bunk House, at the end of the Private Road.. It is a £10 charge pre booked here https://www.college-valley.co.uk/buy-vehicle-permits/ . There are limited permits but if you do not pay the charge it is a 4 mile up and 4 mile back walk from Hethpool, the nearest public parking spot. The walk in adds considerably to the day, lessening its enjoyment.
