A Weekend walking exploring the Best of Hadrian’s Wall.
Join us on a Weekend Walking break in June or September and discover the Best of Hadrian’s Wall in the company of a local guide and a group of fellow enthusiasts.
Those who are happy to walk an undulating walk of up to 10 miles and have an interest in the history of Hadrian’s Wall. They would also be part of a small group of like minded people.
The walking is generally straightforward but it does ‘undulate’ a lot in some parts. However there is usually a lower option going parallel to the wall.
Saturday: Start 9.30. 9 miles
We will meet at the Roman Army Museum before heading east. The walk starts at Walltown quarry, climbing steadily past a number of Milecastles/Turrets and Aesica/Great Chester’s Fort before dropping to Cawfield where there is a 2nd quarry and a welcome cafe.
In the afternoon it is a steady climb to the highest point of the Wall at Shields (345m) with superb views both north and south. The day finishes with a final descent to the settlement at Once Brewed where there is a pub, cafe and excellent visitor centre.
Saturday Evening: There will be an evening meal (optional) at either Haydon Bridge/Twice Brewed depending where the majority are based.
Sunday: Start 9.30. 9 miles
A circular walk from the Visitor Centre at the Sill Visitor Centre at Once Brewed. The walk starts by climbing to Steel Rigg and continuing past Sycamore Gap (and the stump of the tree) before undulating gently to Housesteads Fort, the pearl of the wall. From here (and lunch) return via a track on the north side of the wall imagining how the Scots must have felt.
£80 for the 2 days guided walks.
Jonathan is an experienced guide who was born and bred in nearby Newcastle. He has a great knowledge of local history including Hadrian’s Wall,
We will also advise on places to stay, transport and any other ‘practical’ matters.
The pub at Twice Brewed is the perfect place to stay for the walk but the excellent bus service (and arranged lifts) make Haltwhistle another very good place where there is more accommodation.
For those not wishing to stay in a pub/hotel there is a Youth Hostel at Once Brewed and nearby Greenhead as well as camping at Langley Dam amongst others.
