Where is this walk?

Windy Gyle

Windy Gyle straddles the English/Scottish border. It is part of a long undulating ridge which culminates at Cheviot. However it is a fine mountain in its own right, approached on this occasion from the Upper Coquet valley to the south.

The Walk

I have been advised that the climb of Windy Gyle is the best walk in the Cheviot hills. Having completed the walk I have no reason to doubt it. The walk is so typical of walking in the Northumbrian heartland. A series of wide rolling hills, deep valleys and a near deserted landscape characterises the area. However the paths are excellent, easy to follow and lead unerringly to your destination. For company there are a myriad of skylarks, the odd ‘Donald’ bagger, a flock of ‘geeps’ and yourself. Expect nothing more.

The border of Scotland and England does bisect the summit. In fact the most straightforward approach is from the north (thus the Donald reference) but it is more satisfying from the Northumberland end. Start the walk in a clockwise direction. The climb over the Street (an old Drovers Road) and Black Braes offers the best approach to Windy Gyle with lovely views over the rolling hills. The summit is marked by a large cairn and trig point but is also the place to decide on the return route. The easiest is to follow the path directly south but if you have the energy head east for a mile and then take the track south.

Recommend

Where to start a walk is often a challenge, particularly in unfamiliar territory. There are two alternatives on Windy Gyle both only 3/4 a mile away. I chose the larger car park at Barrowburn but follow the road another 3/4 mile and there is a shorter walking option at, opposite where Slimefoot Pub used to stand, notorious as a whiskey smuggler’s base. There is now parking for 6 or 7 cars…more than enough!

Navigation Tips on Windy Gyle

The sketch map shows 3 alternative descents. The route of the GPX file heads up The Street from Barrowburn and descends directly in to the farm from due north.
