Walking Mini Breaks 2026

November 1, 2025

We have introduced a number of Walking/Hiking Mini Breaks for 2026. They are a combination of a small group (no more than 10) walks with a professional guide (usually myself). The walks are spread across the Yorkshire Dales, the Lake District and Northumberland. We even have Navigation Training Weekends in the Yorkshire Dales.

The Mini Breaks are all planned to provide a fun, informative two days which takes the group to somewhere (or to learn something) which they would not normally/or unable to do on their own.

The ‘Dales 30‘ are the 30 mountains in the Yorkshire Dales and climbing them all makes for an excellent challenge. They are all over 2,000 feet high so each day is a good walk. Here we tackle a few of the lesser known and awkward ones.

Day 1 on the Ingleton Weekend is a long one, climbing Gragareth (bizarrely the highest point in Lancashire) and Great Coum which overlooks Dentdale. The second day is a walk from the village of Barbon over Calf Top overlooking the lovely Barbondale, one of the most attractive dales in the area.

The National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) is a personal performance, non-competitive, incentive scheme for all ages to learn navigation skills and gain confidence to get out and enjoy the countryside. NNAS courses are delivered throughout the country by over 300 approved providers. We offer 2 levels (Bronze and Silver) over a weekend in either Rothbury in Northumberland and Reeth in the Yorkshire Dales.

The weekend is very relaxed, informative and we aim to give everyone a very enjoyable time. The moors of Northumberland and Swaledale are excellent places to learn navigation skills, many of the places less travelled.

The Lakeland ‘Edges’, Helvellyn & Blencathra

20/21st June

Striding Edge
Striding Edge

A weekend that combines 2 of the classic ridge scrambles in the Lake District.

On Saturday we will climb Helvellyn via Striding Edge, probably the most famous ‘scramble’ in the Lake District. The descent is likely to be via the neighbouring edge of Swirral which leads to the remote summit of Catstycam. The following day we will scramble over Halls Fell Edge to the summit of Blencathra, in my opinion the finest route to the finest mountain in the Lake District.

3 Peaks in 3 Days (Yorkshire)

28/29/30 April

22/23/24th September

Limestone Pavement on Ingleborough
Limestone Pavement on Ingleborough

Normally hikers spend one day exhausting themselves by climbing all three iconic peaks in one day. We take a more relaxed and enjoyable approach by climbing one a day. Each mountain is climbed by its best route (not the ones on the challenge) with more time taken to enjoy the spectacular scenery of the area. We walk in a small group with plenty of times to stop each day and being midweek less crowds on the hills and a better choice of accommodation.

Navigation Training Weekend

14/15 March. Settle

30/31st May Settle

Day 2 Navigation Weekend at Austwick
Day 2 Navigation Weekend in the limestone Dales

Based near Settle in the Yorkshire Dales the 2 day course is intended to give you the confidence to plan walks both on and off paths, understand maps, when to use them and how to use a compass. The first day is based in the countryside near Long Preston and is concentrated on path navigation and map features. The second day we venture further afield on the lower slopes of Ingleborough, leave the paths and concentrate on walking on featureless ground with compass at hand!

Northumberland Coastal Walk

11/12/13/14th May

Pilgrims Way low tide

The Northumberland Coast is the most beautiful area of coastline in England. Unspoilt, usually very quiet and a mix of long sweeping beaches, castles and fishing villages. The 4 day walk covers the area from Berwick to Alnmouth (both on train stations) and we can suggest choices of accommodation and arrange any pick ups.

Some of the highlights are the castles of Bamburgh and Dunstanburgh, the lovely villages of Craster, Embleton and Bamburgh and the endless acres of beaches. We also cross the sands of Pilgrim’s Way to Holy Island/Lindisfarne and circle this famous island , a haven of history, beauty and industry.

All of our Guided breaks include the services of a guide which is likely to be myself. We will also offer advice as to where to book your accommodation and help get to the start of the walks.

Enjoy your walking
