Walking Weekenders 2025

January 16, 2025

We have introduced a number of Walking Weekenders for 2025. They are a combination of small group (no more than 10) walks with a professional guide (usually myself). The walks are spread across the Yorkshire Dales, the Lake District and Northumberland. We even have Navigation Training Weekends in the Yorkshire Dales.

The Weekenders are all planned to provide a fun, informative two days which takes the group to somewhere (or to learn something) which they would not normally/or unable to do on their own.

April 26/27th. Navigation Training Course

Day 2 Navigation Weekend at Austwick
Day 2 Navigation Weekend at Austwick

Based near Settle in the Yorkshire Dales the 2 day course is intended to give you the confidence to plan walks both on and off paths, understand maps, when to use them and how to use a compass. The first day is based in the countryside near Long Preston and is concentrated on path navigation and map features. The second day we venture further afield on the lower slopes of Ingleborough, leave the paths and concentrate on walking on featureless ground with compass at hand!

May 3/4th. ‘Dales 30’ Weekender – Ingleton

The ‘Dales 30‘ are the 30 mountains in the Yorkshire Dales and climbing them all makes for an excellent challenge. They are all over 2,000 feet high so each day is a good walk. Here we tackle a few of the lesser known and awkward ones.

Day 1 on the Ingleton Weekend is a long one, climbing Gragareth (bizarrely the highest point in Lancashire) and Great Coum which overlooks Dentdale. The second day is a walk from the village of Barbon over Calf Top overlooking the lovely Barbondale, one of the most attractive dales in the area.

May 31st/June 1st. The Lakeland ‘Edges’

Striding Edge
Striding Edge

A weekend that combines 2 of the classic ridge scrambles in the Lake District.

On Saturday we will climb Helvellyn via Striding Edge, probably the most famous ‘scramble’ in the Lake District. The descent is likely to be via the neighbouring edge of Swirral which leads to the remote summit of Catstycam. The following day we will scramble over Sharp Edge to the summit of Blencathra. Many believe that Sharp Edge is more challenging than Striding Edge. It is an easy return via the idyllic Scales Tarn.

June 14/15th. The Best of Hadrian’s Wall

Hadrian's Wall
Hadrian’s Wall

The 2 days of walking are focused on the most interesting parts of Hadrian’s Wall. To be honest Hadrian’s Wall at each end has many miles of rather dull walking. However the central section where the holiday is focused is superb; dramatic, full of history and always interesting. Each day there is roughly 8 miles of walking but it is easy to cut short the day due to the excellent bus service.

Each day we will head out from the Twice Brewed hotel and amongst a range of forts and milecastles visit the great forts of Housesteads, Vindolanda and Great Chesters; Sycamore Gap and two of the main Roman quarries where they mined the stone and the highest point of the wall at Sewingshields.

June 28/29th. ‘Dales 30’ Weekender Kettlewell

The ‘Dales 30‘ are the 30 mountains in the Yorkshire Dales and climbing them all makes for an excellent challenge. They are all over 2,000 feet high so each day is a good walk. Here we tackle a few of the lesser known and awkward ones.

Kettlewell is a wonderful base for an assault on some of the ‘Dales 30’ mountains. A pretty village circled by the higher fells. Day 1 combines Great Whernside and Buckden Pike in a grand circuit whilst Day 2 follows the long ridge of Birks on the west side of Wharfedale.

Sept 20/21st. Great Gable and Catbells

A contrasting weekend of Lake District walking, something for everyone. We are based in Keswick.

Summit of Catbells
Summit of Catbells

On Day 1 it is a rough climb from Seathwaite up one of the iconic mountains in the Lake District, the perfectly formed Great Gable. The descent back to Seathwaite goes over two further Wainwrights making for a satisfying but tiring day. Day 2 climbs the graceful fell of Catbells starting in the pretty Newlands Valley. It is still a steep climb to the summit but the views from there make any effort very worthwhile.

Midweek Guided Breaks

We also have a series of Midweek Walking Breaks with a guide in the Yorkshire Dales and Northumberland.

3 Peaks in 3 Days (Yorkshire). Rather than climb all three mountains in one day, climb one of Pen-y-Ghent. Ingleborough and Whernside each day.

Hull Pot on Pen-y-Ghent

Northumberland Coast. 3 days walking including Holy Island, Embleton to Bamburgh and Alnwick to Alnmouth.

All of our Guided breaks include the services of a guide which is usually myself. We will also offer advice as to where to book your accommodation and help get to the start of the walks.

Enjoy your walking
