The walk from Alnwick to Alnmouth follows the steam railway line, some open countryside before arriving at the coast at Foxton Golf Club. The final mile can either follow the sands or stick to the path through the golf course. A regular bus service will return you to Alnwick.
Many people stay or live at Alnwick. The walks from the town itself are not great (surprisingly). The short stroll along the River Aln is enjoyable with iconic views of Alnwick Castle and Hulne Park is lovely but sadly bans dogs. However head east from the town and take the walk from Alnwick to Alnmouth. It is highly enjoyable and full of interest.
The walk can be done from anywhere in Alnwick but the official start is near the start of the Aln Valley Railway in Lionheart Industrial Estate. The Aln Valley Railway at presently only runs a heritage service for 1 mile but there are plans to link it with Alnmouth station in the future which would be excellent. Having walked alongside the railway for a mile the path heads across fields, under a viaduct, alongside the river at Lesbury before emerging on the coast at Foxton Golf Club.
The tide may well decide how to progress from here. If it is in follow the public foorpath through the golf course. The advantage of this is the magnificent views from a point half way to Alnmouth which has a bench. The views along the coast from here are superb. The second alternative is to take to the sands and follow the beach to Alnmouth. Here there is a rocky headland to cross before arriving at the beach at Alnmouth. Take a note here of the way the sea is eating away at the golf course and the various flood protections in place to try and preserve the green and tee. I think the sea will win, it feels a bit like King Canute!
Alnmouth is a lovely coastal village with very good pubs and cafes. The X18 bus service runs from the centre of Alnmouth to Alnwick roughly every hour and takes 20 minutes. It also has services in the evening so you can enjoy a pie and pint in the pubs!
This goes against the grain but I suggest doing the walk first, bus second. This is partly due to the regular and reliable bus service but also my daughter tells me always walk downhill if you can so walking to towards the sea makes sense!
