Warkworth; a castle and a pristine beach

The beach at Warkworth is a fine example of the best of Northumberland. The beach is a perfect 2 mile stretch of the purest sand, the return via a good path on an attractive estuary with the walk improved further by a visit to Warkworth Castle.

The Walk

I have always believed that the best of the Northumberland Coast starts at Warkworth. The pristine beach which lies between Warkworth and Alnmouth is backed throughout by large sand dunes, a fine links golf course and an estuary which separates the beach from the busy town of Amble. I prefer the southern loop from the car park as there are interesting views of Amble and Warkworth Castle from the wide track that flanks the estuary. However if you head north towards Alnmouth you have to return the same way. Like Amble , Alnmouth is not accessible from the beach (without swimming/wading and to get to either involves a long inland detour.

From the car park outside Warkworth and next to the golf course and holiday park cross the golf club and on to the beach. Turn right at the sea and wander the 1 mile towards the harbour of Amble. Scramble up on to the pier and enjoy the views across to the town from amongst the sand dunes. Rather than follow the pier turn right and head towards the estuary and the new posh apartments of Amble. A wide track continues back towards the start, sandwiched between the dunes and the estuary. If you wish to jump back on to the beach there are many paths crossing the dunes.

Recommend

On a warm evening (!) there is nothing better than to walk to the south end of the beach where a number of old tree trunks make for an excellent sitting area. Great for a quiet cup of coffee, bottle of Alnwick Gold or picnic. Alternatively bring some friends and enjoy a few beers but be aware of a late swim – it reminds me of the opening scene of Jaws!

Navigation Tips at the Warkworth Beach Walk

A scan of the O/S 1.25,000 map will give you a good sense of quieter and more popular beaches. In this case it is obvious there is no easy access to Warkworth beach from either of the larger population centres Amble or Alnmouth. Even Warkworth is a mile walk away unless you drive to park. As a rule the best and quieter places are not so obvious to get to…obvious but true.
