We had an amazing day with Jonathan climbing Blencathra via Hall’s Fell. The route was spot on, giving opportunities to do as much or as little scrambling as we wanted. My confidence grew on the ridge ascent with a great sense of achievement at the top and the views were just stunning. Our day included navigation skills and we put learning into practice in the wilderness of Mungrisdale Common, as part of the descent. It was the best start to our week in the Lakes and we went on to plan our own routes and do more great climbs, applying our much improved map reading skills! Thoroughly recommend Jonathan as a guide, his patient calm approach really helps build confidence, his knowledge of the Fells is vast and he’s really good company to walk with too!

We both had a fantastic navigation day & walk with Jonathan, we learned so much about how to use a map and be more observational ! The walk was well planned with lots of places of interest and plenty of stops to allow us to study the map and take compass bearings. The natural beauty in the countryside around Pateley Bridge was breathtaking, and we are now a lot more confident with a map in hand and looking forward to exploring further afield and broadening our walking horizons. We would thoroughly recommend walking and navigating with Jonathan, a great experience from start to finish.

In 2018, my friend and I set ourselves the challenge of completing the 30 Dales mountains in Jonathan’s book ‘The Dales 30’. Although we had been keen walkers for many years our navigation skills were greatly lacking. We did our first few ascents mainly using the text in the book and it was largely luck that got us there! So last year we enrolled on an introductory navigation course with Jonathan. It was excellent and we learned a lot. We tackled our next few fells with much greater confidence. However, there were times when our compass skills weren’t good enough, especially when the clouds came down. Also, we had left to the last the fells that to us sounded much more difficult to navigate – the ones that Jonathan warned were ‘compass country’, or ‘featureless’! So we asked Jonathan for a follow-up day. It was great! We were able to build on the skills of our introductory day, he helped us to really get a grip of the compass work and it was tremendous fun!
We have continued the climbs with renewed confidence and now have just our final one to do…..the ‘featureless’ one! I would recommend Jonathan’s navigation courses to anyone at any level of competence. I would also encourage all walkers to have a go at the Dales 30.

A fantastic day with Jonathan, the right amount of geology, history and gawping at wonderful views. We had a refresher in map and compass nurdling too which was helpful at the top of a foggy Ingleborough.

I would highly recommend where2walk, efficient admin and relaxing guiding are a great combination.

We were safely guided on a fantastic day around Derwenwater with Jonathan as our guide. Being a group of 6 persons with different skills, Jonathan encouraged us all brilliantly. He is very calm and smooth and really enhanced our experience. Will definitaly hire him again.

I wanted to share my love of the Lake District with a group of friends from ‘down south’. Jonathan identified a great route through varying scenery – some of it along the West side of Windermere, some of it through Beatrix Potter countryside – it was absolutely amazing and allowed me to admire the scenery as well as chat to my friends without having to constantly check the map. Highly recommend Jonathan – so nice to chat to as well as rely on his navigational skills.

We recently held a team-building event in the Lake District. We needed to get to know each other on a work level in the meetings and personal level whilst out and about. I contacted Jonathan and booked him as our guide for a couple of days hiking around Windermere. It was so nice to have someone guide us through. Jonathan was patient with us and pushed us to do a bit more than we thought we were capable of – a message to take home! Would happily recommend to any business looking to hold an offsite meeting.

I have recently retired and started walking with Jonathan once a month.
The entire experience has become something I really enjoy and the benefit of having Jonathan there to guide, cannot be under estimated in terms of enhancing the experience and remaining in a safe environment.

We had a super, challenging day’s climb up Scafel Pike and stayed in Grasmere. Jonathan and Mist the collie dog were super company – lot’s of knowledge was shared and he adapted the climb to suit our needs and wants ; ) It was exhilarating and fun with Jonathon pointing out some safe and fun places to swim when we again return. I will certainly get him to guide us again and can’t wait to learn how to map read competently. Humour and company shared for the whole day! I would highly recommend him.

  • Ella Fearon says:

Jonathan was a fantastic guide for a recent fundraising hike we did in the Lake District. He was able to advise on our proposed route beforehand and was very friendly and easy to talk to. He led us very competently over a couple of peaks in high winds and low cloud. He not only took into account our safety but also the enjoyment factor of the walk by suggesting a change of plan due to continuing bad weather and we were grateful for his expertise. It meant that we had an excellent experience overall and would certainly use him again!

  • Sadie Morrison says:

We have used Jonathan as a guide in the Lake District on several occasions and have found him to be very competent and knowledgeable, giving us the confidence to try paths we wouldn’t normally take. We will certainly be using him again.
