Advanced Navigation Skills Training Day in the Yorkshire Dales

Description

Yorkshire Dales

The 1 day Advanced Navigation Skills day is primarily for those wanting to leave paths, understand the importance of contours, walk in cloudy conditions and use a compass to navigate confidently on open land.

  • Use a compass to take a bearing both in clear and cloudy conditions (ie: from the land or from a map)
  • Plan a strategic leg avoiding difficulties and any potential danger.
  • Follow a bearing accurately on rough/featureless ground.
  • Employ relocation strategies when lost on open ground.
  • Understand and apply the following components of a navigational strategy ‘aiming off’, ‘attack points’, ‘collecting features’.
  • Learn how to use contour features effectively; both large and small, on the map and on the ground.
  • Judge distance accurately on the map and on the ground.
  • Understand ‘mountain awareness’ and how it helps confidence on any given walk.

Our Advanced Navigation Course is suitable for those who want venture away from the paths and tracks and explore more of the open countryside. The use of land forms (particularly contours) and the ability to use a compass correctly and accurately form the basis of the day.

It is also suitable for those wanting the skills and confidence to explore the upland areas of the Dales, Lakes and others

In the Dales it can be combined with one of our Beginners Course to form the second part of a Navigation Training Weekend.

So after the first course earlier in the year , Ive been walking every week with gps in the bag and just using a map and compass . Needless to say ive been watching youtube. So i decided to enrol the Hill Skills Course , based in Austwick. Fantastic day. Jonathans calm teaching style is great, and if you dont get it just ask again. I learned a few more skills and cant wait to put them into practice. I feel far more comfortable and confident now in the hills. Im enjoying using my new skills whilst out walking and it adds to the enjoyment ,knowing im planning my own walks and if the worst happens im in a great place to get my self to safety . Great Course
    Mountain Skills Course next

I would thoroughly recommend the Hill Skills day. I was talking myself out of going, thinking that I would be out of my depth. But, I’m so glad I went along. A great day, learning and practising skills. I left more confident and determined to plan my own walks.

The Hill Skills course was very useful. I have struggled to use compasses properly for years and Jonathan was patient and by the end I was much more confident I can find my way in the cloud. A very useful day in the lovely Yorkshire Dales
