Climb Cross Fell The most popular way to climb Cross Fell is from the small village of Garrigill near Alston. Even then it is a long climb across the moors. On a fine day the views across the north eastern lakes are good. Semer Water walk The Semer Water walk is unusual. Not only are lakes very rare in the Yorkshire Dales but this one is both a nature reserve and an outdoor centre. The return is much improved by climbing to the ridge above the west banks. Exploring Cotterdale Exploring Cotterdale is the most interesting section of a walk that starts by heading up the Pennine Way. After crossing a shoulder of moors from Cotterdale the return to Appersett is down Mossdale. The Walk Thousands of travellers will pass through Hawes and head towards Sedbergh or Dent without any inkling that Cotterdale exists. Druid’s Temple at Masham The Druid’s Temple at Masham was a folly built by the local landowner 200 years ago. It is an impressive stone circle. The walk is across pleasant countryside with good views across the area. The Walk There are a number of fine walks near Masham. Leyburn & the Ladies Shawl Leyburn is an attractive Yorkshire Dales market town and a good base to explore Wensleydale. The best of Leyburn is shown though by a walk from the town along ‘The Shawl’ and returning alongside the River Ure. Its tame countryside but full of history, country houses and tranquil scenery. Ingleborough from Clapham The climb of Ingleborough from Clapham is one of the finest walks in the Yorkshire Dales. The ascent is full of interest and the descent takes you through, in my opinion, the finest limestone pavements in England. The Walk I believe that the climb of Ingleborough from Clapham via Trow Gill and Gaping Gill is 5 Rating: Difficult walk 11mi Distance: 11 miles / 17.6 km 561m Elevation: 561m / 1840ft
Ancient Castles of Mallerstang The two ancient castles of Mallerstang (Lammerside and Pendragon) offer a focus for an excellent walk along this rarely visited dale. The backdrop of Wild Boar Fell and the embryonic River Eden adds to one of my favourite walks. The Walk Mallerstang is an unspoilt dale to the south of Kirkby Stephen. Dacre Pasture near Harrogate A walk over Dacre Pasture near Harrogate is a long day exploring a rarely walked area. A mix of lanes, tracks and footpaths pass through a landscape of moors, farmland and a reservoir. The Remotest Spot in England? I was somewhat surprised to find that the remotest spot in England is in the Yorkshire Dales. I had assumed it was further north, maybe in the Pennines of Cumbria or Northumberland. It is not. Highlights of Wensleydale walk The walk between Leyburn and Aysgarth covers many of the highlights of Wensleydale In addition there is a long and pleasant section of walking along the River Ure. Walk round Stock’s Reservoir The walk round Stock’s Reservoir is full of interest. Much of it stays close to the water’s edge. However in places the tracks venture inland and are much the better for it. The Walk Knowing the history of Stock’s Reservoir helps increase the enjoyment of the walk. Coverdale and Colsterdale The walk from Coverdale to Colsterdale overlooking Nidderdale is a long moorland trek. It is enjoyable if you like solitude, large skies, uniform terrain and exploring little visited dales. It is, in fact, typical Dales.
