Hackfall Woods near Masham The walk to Hackfall Woods near Masham takes you initially alongside the River Ure. Hackfall Woods (or simply Hackfall) is a beautifully managed woodland peppered with paths, follies and a vast array of fauna and flora. Melmerby Fell To the north of Cross Fell there is a fine Pennine walk up Melmerby Fell. The walk is similar in character to Cross Fell but shorter. It is quiet place and an excellent option to achieve a less frequented visited peak. The Walk Apparently fell runners regularly take to the slopes of Melmerby Fell. Walk around Kirkby Malzeard The village and land around Kirkby Malzeard is hidden in an area between Masham, Ripon and the Eastern Dales . The village and buildings of the village are lovely and the walk starts with an interesting section of woodland. Richmond to Marske There is a few options on the walk from Richmond to Marske. I prefer taking to Wycliffe Scar on the way out and the River Swale by return. The views from Wycliffe Scar particularly near the Monument are genuinely spectacular. The Walk This is my favourite walk out of Richmond. Baugh Fell Baugh Fell is a remote mountain lying to the east of Sedbergh and offers the greatest challenge to those climbing the ‘Dales 30’. It is a large area of featureless moorland rising to an interesting summit area. The views back west to the Howgills are superb. Hidden Valleys of Wharfedale Littondale and Langstrothdale are two of the hidden valleys of Wharfedale. Linking them in a long walk makes for one of the best days out in the Yorkshire Dales. If you do one walk do this. The Walk The smaller dales offer, in my opinion, the best walking in the Dales. River Lune at Kirkby Lonsdale The River Lune at Kirkby Lonsdale has a beautiful stretch of riverside walking to the south of Devil’s Bridge. The outbound walk passes a trig point and some quiet country lanes before it returns along the river. The Walk I knew very little about the River Lune at Kirkby Lonsdale before undertaking this walk. Ribblehead, a short walk The Ribblehead viaduct is one of the most impressive engineering projects in England. It is also sat in wonderful scenery and this short Ribblehead walk will do it full justice. The extension to Blea Moor tunnel only adds to it. Arncliffe Circular walk The Arncliffe Circular walk leaves Littondale on an excellent bridleway. It climbs up the moors heading towards, but not reaching, Malham Tarn. The return has views over Upper Wharfedale and across to Buckden Pike. The Walk I am always looking for new walks out of Littondale. Great Whernside Great Whernside is one of four ‘Dales 30‘ mountains that circle the head of Upper Wharfedale. The climb is steep and some of the countryside is rough but the summit ridge is a spectacular place. The Walk Upper Whernside has four excellent mountains. Nicky Nook Nicky Nook is an easy hill to climb near Lancaster on the fringes of the Pennine moors. However its reduced height is more than made up for by the excellent views and interesting walking. The Walk Less than 20 minutes from Lancaster on the Yorkshire/Lancashire border is the lovely little hill of Nicky Nook (215ms). 2 Rating: Easy with uphill sections 4mi Distance: 4 miles / 6.4 km 207m Elevation: 207m / 679ft
History in Gunnerside Gill The history of the Yorkshire Dales and Swaledale in particular can be best seen in Gunnerside Gill. The old workings are prominent on the walk and characterise each step. It is a walk with a difference.
